Helping Grade 9s Step Confidently Into Their Future

November 2025

This year, our Life Skills project at Plettenberg Bay Secondary supported 237 Grade 9 learners as they explored who they are, what they enjoy, and how their subject choices can shape future opportunities.

Learners started with a series of sessions unpacking the big questions: What am I good at? What motivates me? How do my interests connect to real careers? From there, they completed the Holland Code (RIASEC) interest assessment — a practical, research-based tool that helps students identify their natural strengths and preferred work styles.

After the assessments, we guided learners through understanding their profiles and linking the results to possible study paths and workplace environments. Many began to see options they’d never considered before, which created some great “lightbulb” moments.

To close the programme, psychologist Kelly de Rosner hosted a group debrief session where learners could ask questions, reflect on their results, and hear clear, calm guidance on how to think about their upcoming Grade 10 subject decisions.

The growth in confidence was unmistakable. Learners spoke about feeling more informed, more hopeful, and far less overwhelmed — exactly what this project is designed to achieve.

A big thank-you to the school team, our funders, and everyone who helped make this possible. Your support empowered 237 young people to look at their future with curiosity and courage.
