Maths is coming alive in Bitou!

November 2025

After three years of hard work, creativity, and a whole lot of counting, our Mathematics Resource Project has officially wrapped — and the results are something to smile about.

This year we focused on Grade 1 across eight schools, reaching 24 teachers and 729 little learners. With colourful, CAPS-aligned maths packs in English, Afrikaans, and isiXhosa, classrooms have turned into buzzing spaces where learning feels more like play than pressure.

Teachers tell us they’re seeing something wonderful:
✨ Kids actually enjoying maths
✨ Better number sense
✨ Stronger understanding through hands-on, visual learning
✨ And yes… fierce competition during Bingo and dominoes

(We don’t want to say the games are popular, but let’s just say even the teachers get a bit competitive.)

Two big training sessions with the WCED helped teachers bring groupwork to life — not the “everyone copies the same thing” kind, but real, collaborative learning where kids learn by doing, talking, thinking, and trying again.

And here’s the big milestone:

Every Foundation Phase teacher (Grades 1–3) in our participating schools is now fully equipped with the complete maths resource suite.

Our long-term goal?

To help our learners grow strong enough in maths that choosing it in Grade 10 feels natural, not scary.

These resources are also available on our website for parents and anyone else who would like to download and use them!

A huge, heartfelt thank you to the Olthaver Trust, whose support from day one made this entire journey possible. You’ve helped us plant seeds of confidence and curiosity that will grow for years to come.

Here’s to playful learning, brighter futures, and kids who realise they’re far better at maths than they ever thought.
